Heat Emergencies

By EMS Chief Andrew Spalding
June 9, 2011

On June 9th, 2011 the Paramedic Ambulance was alerted to the Regency Stadium to assist with the Mass Casualty Incident. Children from the tri-county area were on a field trip at the stadium when the heat became overwhelming. PA-148 ended up transporting 5 patients to Southern Maryland Hospital Center.

While PA-148 was handling their call, the BLS unit was alerted initial assignment to the White Plains Golf Course for a heat emergency on a bus. A-149 quickly responded and was placed in service in La Plata as units that had went in service from closer calls responded. A-149 was then sent to Station 10 to fill their quarters. Shortly after going en route to Station 10, Chief 14 then came on the air requesting 2 BLS units be sent to Piccowaxen Middle School to check a couple children out for heat related illnesses. A-149 responded from 301 and 6. A-149 arrived on the scene secondary to Ambulance 69 to find about 10 children needing medical attention. A bus from the stadium had brought children back to Piccowaxen that were determined to be ok at the stadium.

After getting those children tended to, 2 more buses full of children had arrived, luckily only sending a couple ill children from each bus to the treatment area for heat illness as well. Majority of the children only needed to be cooled down, and were cooled and released to the care of their parents. A total of 5 children were transported to local hospitals for check up.

***Thanks to all area companies for your excellent teamwork and assistance! Also, a HUGE thanks to the staff at The Piccowaxen Middle School for all of your hard work in helping us with whatever we needed. You all were very organized and it was a tremendous help***
